I really enjoyed this when I read it alone, but I couldn't translate it as well to storytime. I didn't think the delivery was great, but the kids all said it was a fun story afterwards. Who knows? ( ) I don't really get the appeal of the Sally stories. I find the illustrations static and the plots without much interest. I prefer Calhoun's Henry stories or Alexandra Day's Carl, both of which are similar. But if you have Sally fans you'll want to add her latest adventure. Review copy provided by Abrams.
A black Labrador named Sally goes for a ride after following the smell of fried chicken into the gondola of a hot air balloon. Her adventure attracts attention as people think of ways to rescue her. Eventually, a child thinks of a way to use Sally’s playfulness to come down from the clouds. The story ends with Sally helping herself, which is empowering for children to read. Stephen Huneck writes at a slow pace, careful to avoid frightening young readers. Huneck’s illustrations are large, colorful, and simple. Sally is likeable and relatable to children with pets. The pictures fill most of the page and the text is not heavy, one or two sentences per page. While the plot is simple, the mechanics of hot air balloons may not be something younger audiences will comprehend. Adults might see the connection between Sally’s ride and the Boy in the Balloon adventure that took place over the Denver metro area last spring. School libraries could use this for story time during balloon, flying, or dog-themed weeks. Pertenece a las series
