What if a boy found a beach ball and kicked it into the ocean? What if two seals found it and began to play? What if a third seal appeared on the beach looking for a friend? Enjoy this visit to the beach and the chance to guess what happens when different choices are made.

I really did not like this book. I had a hard time understanding the plot. i didn't understand what I was supposed to read or get from the pictures. ( )

I liked the deceptive simplicity of this book. On the surface their are not many words or much going on, but when you take a deeper look, you realize the book emphasizes cause and effect and the different outcomes of a situation. I think this really speaks to how our actions can have unforeseen consequences. You never know what my happen from an action you preform, so it is important to think things through and be aware of the repercussions. ( )

Using vivid pictures and simple phrases, Seeger poses three different scenarios as 3 seals go after a boy's beach ball. Definitely a book that can be used to talk about the power of sharing and making friends. ( )

"What If?" by Laura Seeger shows the different scenarios of two seals playing at the beach, where they lose their ball and another seal comes along. The scenarios show the different outcomes of what can happen, whether one of the two seals gets left out or the third seal joins them. It is obvious that the two original seals are the same color, and the third seal is a different color. This picture book provides an underlying theme for students to know that it is okay to have a friend join in, even if they aren't the same color as you. This can also teach students to share and it is okay to have more than one friend. ( )

I really enjoyed reading this book to my kids because I got to see how they would have told this story and boy was there a lot of different stories. I picked this in particular because a lot of my kids go to the beach every weekend or have beach houses. They loved the seals but they would say "that's not nice your suppose to share with your friends" throughout the whole book until we got to the end. At the end when they saw the seals all playing together they said "now that's nice". This book allowed their imagination to run wild but also taught them to share. ( )
