Glad I picked it up. I read a review when I first picked it up saying it was nothing new, but I would disagree with that-while it has elements of other urban fantasy series I’ve read, the author has created an original world with characters I already love. As soon as I finished, I went online to see if there’s another installment yet. Not yet, it turns out, but I’ll be a happy reader in July! sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

As a grave witch, Alex Craft can speak to the dead. She's even on good terms with Death himself. As a consultant for the police, she's seen a lot of dark magic, but nothing has prepared her for her latest case. Someone really doesn't want her to know what the dead have to say, and she'll have to work with mysterious homicide detective Falin Andrews to figure out why. This world is an alternate timeline one where the Fae came out of hiding. Alex, as a grave witch, has the ability to call on dead peoples’ souls or essence? The book wasn’t 100% clear on what a shade actually represents. Anyway, she’s apparently really good at this but terrible at all other magic.
The characterization lacked some depth so I didn’t really feel like I knew any of the characters and thus didn’t root for or oppose in general. Hard to get me invested in the goings on of a character who lacked personality besides, yeah, she’s a grave witch with family issues and sees the world with grave sight.
So the romance part of this story suffers the same fate. Death is represented as some regular looking Joe but isn’t of course. Then you had Falin who was pulling the gruff cop, stay out it routine and suddenly they’re in the sack together. An entire chapter devoted to that. Ugh. Also Death is in love with her. Hmmm
Basically, it was an okay book. Not sure if I’ll continue the series or not. Three stars.
