The Northeastern Pacific Ocean rolls and tumbles across some 40 degrees of longitude and about 35 degrees latitude, measuring out about 3,000 miles from east to west and the same distance, more or less, from north to south. These distances are approximations from Vancouver Island to somewhere out in the Aleutians quite a bit to the west of Adak and from Baja California to the water wastes of Bering Strait. The Bering Sea must be considered a part of the Northeastern Pacific because its fisheries are an extension, an evergrowing one, of the fisheries of the Eastern Ocean although on the global projection, the Bering does not appear to be an integral part of the Pacific because the Aleutians fence it off. Geographers say the Pacific itself includes 63 or 64 million square miles of the surface of the planet and, of this total area, the Northeastern Pacific sprawls over 9 million square miles, a fair enough chunk of the parent sea and of the planet too.
