Oh, oh, how wonderful! I love that the teacher, too, is a porcupine, and has never had a balloon. The development is just long enough, thoroughly but concisely covering 'why even porcupines can't have balloons' and 'what strategies to tame quills don't work.' If, like me, you're tired of bunnies and chickens, it's refreshing to see porcupines, 'coons, 'possums, skunks, etc. But not only does this picture-book have original characters, it has a refreshingly original story.

Thank you, thank you, to author and illustrator. If I had a grandchild or was a buyer for a library I would definitely buy this book. ( )

Young Reader Reaction: My kids loved this book. They requested it over and over. They thought Isabel was funny, especially her repeated attempts to balloon-proof herself.

Adult Reader Reaction: I liked A Balloon for Isabella for its funny narrative, bright and cheery illustrations, and its cute message.

Pros: Readers young and old will enjoy this sweet story with beautiful illustrations and a great message.

This book starts with a great hook. Isabel and Walter, two little porcupines, are protesting an unfairness done to them two days before graduation. Because they are covered in quills, Isabel and Walter will not be presented with balloons. They are tired of receiving bookmarks. (The skunks, raccoons, mice, foxes, and other characters appear to be kindergarten age.)

Walter and Isabel attempt several strategies to change the teacher’s mind. The teacher is also a porcupine and has logical reasons why they should not be given balloons. Walter and Isabel refuse to give up their dream. They discuss the special characteristics of balloons and why they each want one so badly. After several failed attempts, Walter and Isabel succeed and are rewarded with the longed for red and green balloons.

Many children will identify with Isabel. It is deeply frustrating to be told you can’t have something because you’re different than everyone else. Isabel and Walter’s determination, problem-solving, and creative thinking are inspiring. The happy ending is well earned.

Laura Rankings illustrations are bright and charming. Readers will laugh at the porcupine’s expressions and their attempts to become pop – proof.

This is a book about problem solving. It is a book with colorful illustrations. Isabel and Walter want a balloon for graduation just like the rest of the class but their teacher thinks it is a dangerous idea. Walter and Isabel put their heads together to come up with a solution that will keep everyone happy.

This is a very colorful and cute story. It is about Isabel, a porcupine, who would like a balloon like the rest of the class on graduation. Her teacher who is also a porcupline who warns her of the dangers of getting a ballon. Isabel and Walter, her best friend, find a solution to their problem. ( )
