Not impressed. Three different themes were repeats from earlier books in the series. ( )

i liked this. it just went along. the culprit was a surprise to me. what had happened to the other daughter i had half worked out-the culprit but not what had happened. ( )

It is not difficult to understand why Thanet has not become a television detective: he has no quirky traits; he is not an alcoholic, drug addict, wife beater, or any of those "interesting" foibles which, we are told, make those chaps interesting.

The book rambles gently towards its conclusion but, when it gets there, it had taken my guess as to what had happened and turned it on its head. This was unexpected and so, extra pleasing.

This is not great literature, it is an easy read. There is nothing wrong with that. It sets out so to be and, as it succeeds in the enjoyability department, is most acceptable. I shall look for more Dorothy Simpson tomes. ( )

Dead and Gone, by Dorothy Simpson, was an interesting story that I thought the author handled well with all the interviews of witnesses and possible suspects that were made by Inspector Thanet and his partner. The story could have used a bit more conflict to keep interest high, but the Inspector’s personality was staid and dry and set the mood for the story. The ending was rather a shocker and was really the height of the story. Overall, I enjoyed reading the book.

And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.  For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:  All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

Mark 7. 20-23.
