A classic beginning reading book, this book has words that even my pre-two-year-old could recognize and read. This book should be on every beginner reader's shelf. Simple and playful, the letter "B" abounds, teaching the sound of the letter as well as reinforcing words that begin with "B". A cute, funny story ensues with rhyming, repeating words and simple pictures that would appeal to even the youngest of readers. ( )

I have actually never read this children's book before, nor have I ever even heard of it. The Berenstains' B Book is a great book to introduce young children to the alphabet, but more specifically the letter B. The big idea of this book is to show children all of the different words that begin with B.
I liked the writing style used in this book. The author used large font throughout the entire book. Every word used in the book began with the letter B. On page 10, the text read "Big brown bear, blue bull, beautiful baboon blowing bubbles biking backward.." This method repeated itself through the entire book, with the only word used that didn't start with the letter b was the word and. However, when the author did use the word and, he made sure to put it in bold font. I like this technique because I think it shows the reader why the word is different. It also helps the reader easily recognize that the word stands out and is different from all the rest. I also liked the ending which I feel was very unexpected. The story ended "and that's what...broke Baby Bird's balloon". Although the author used two other words that didn't begin with the letter B, he was able to wrap up all of the characters and actions into one final scene.
Another thing I liked about the book was its repetitiveness. On each page, a new character or action was introduced. However, each page would also restate the previous characters and actions. For example, page 3 read "Big brown bear, blue bull, beautiful baboon". Page 4 read " Big brown bear, blue bull, beautiful baboon blowing bubbles..." Page 5 read " Big brown bear, blue bull, beautiful baboon blowing bubbles biking backward..." This process repeated throughout the entire story!
The illustrations for this book were quite incredible to be honest. As I mentioned before, a new character or action was introduced on each page. The reason I think the illustrations are so incredible is because on every page, the author illustrated EVERY character thus far. So on the last page, every character from the entire story was present. Also, the author used action words like "BOOM" or "BONK" in his illustrations to show movement and sound. The color used was very appealing to the eye, as well was the line work. Detail was used when necessary (such as in Billy Bunny's breadbasket) and was minimal when it wasn't so important (such as the bubbles; they were simply circles of different sizes).
Overall, I did enjoy reading this book. As I mentioned, it is a good read to introduce a child to the alphabet. The author used appealing and interesting techniques in his writing and illustrations that I guarantee would keep the attention of any child. ( )

The main reason that I enjoyed this book was because that it stuck to the goal it was trying to achieve. Almost every word in the story began with the letter "B". The adjectives describing the characters even started with the letter "B". For example, "Big Brown Bear", "Beautiful Baboon" ( )
