Although slavery was not abolished in the British Empire until 1833, public opinion was opposed to its institution in Canada. This book documents a 1793 episode of a "Negro girl" being taken forcibly across the Niagara border to the USA where she was sold to Americans. The book further documents the ourcry about the violence and legislative steps taken to prevent such breaches of the Public Peace. After outlining probelms of immigration and settlement the book outlines the rise of the Amherstburg Association and other church organizations. It is particularly important in helping modern historians and archaeologists to gain understanding of certian church cemeteries that subsequently have been despoiled by being returned to farmland as is the case with Mount Pleasant Cemetery which is registered with the Ontario Government as Archaeological Site AaHs-55.
