Hush Feleen was a Tennessee boy who saw his father hung for changing a brand on a steer. He eventually tracked down the men who did it. He chased Comanches who had taken his friend's horse and made them pay. He spent the next few years building herds of cattle by branding free range cattle as well as unbranded doggies that belonged to other outfits.
He was a harsh man to his enemies and those he thought were his enemies and very fair with those who worked with him. Two women who loved him that he left behind, a dance hall girl and a Comanche woman eventually came back to get even. The dance hall girl took his money and the Comanche squaw killed his wife & baby daughter which sent him over the edge. Caught altering a brand on a steer, he is hung for the second time and this time he does not escape.
Henry gives us a story about a hero who was difficult to like and some history of the early development of the Texas cattle industry. ( )
