Summary: It's Nathan's first day of school, and he is very excited. But his best friend, Nicholas Alexander, stows away in his pocket, and makes it very hard for Nathan to make friends. At recess, Nicholas Alexander admits that he is afraid that Nathan will make new friends and forget all about him, Nicholas Alexander. Nathan promises that he won't, and after recess, he uses a trick Nicholas Alexander taught him to make some new friends.

Review: A cute but predictable story about a friend being jealous of their friend making new friends. It really isn't anything original or groundbreaking. I was also confused by the illustrations in this book; why are Nathan and Nicholas Alexander the only animals? Every other character in the book is a person. Also, the story is written in such a way that it feels like the author is telling it, rather than showing it. Though it wasn't a bad book, per se, I did not particularly like this book.

Central Idea of It's Time for School, Nathan!: It is important to talk about your feelings with your friends, and it is good to make new friends, as long as you stay friends with the friends you have already. ( )

This story covers the topic of going to school and having trouble fitting in and making friends. In the story there is a classroom of all human children and Nathan is an elephant. This represents how students may feel different and left out at school, however, by the end of the story Nathan makes friends and can't wait to go back to school the next day. The images are inviting for children and draw them in along with the story line which can be relateable to many children.
