Learned that I'm probably not a big fan of mysteries. And this one seemed to go on for too long. Interesting main character; plot was a little convoluted for me. ( )

Houstonians may get more out of the gritty setting than I did. I did like imagining the TX accents and big box church environment. The reveal of the protag's secret is well staged. But I didn't like how he cleaved to job (the popo), wife and church at the end. Guess I was hoping for more. ( )

This was a good book. The mystery of a missing girl intersects in interesting ways with the murder of another girl. The lead detective, Roland, was an interesting and likable character. The book felt long when I was reading it, but it held my interest throughout. I liked Roland's conviction and dedication to solving the case. I liked that Roland's marriage to Charlotte was a strong one, and that they both had fulfilling careers. It was good to see a marriage portrayed as a partnership.
