Narrated by the character of Billie Morgan herself, who at times feels so close that it's almost as if she's whispering in your ear. It's at these points when the writing is most effective, taking us on a trip that paints a dark picture of 70s Britain, full of drug abuse, bad council estates and people with depressingly wretched lives. I really liked the spiky character of Billie but she is definitely a flawed character (which she’s the first to admit). Not exactly a bundle of laughs and a rather sordid tale but an involving read none the less.
Very well written, very gripping.Sometimes felt that I was over-involved in the book! 4/5 ( )

A novel that is a marvellous, breath of fresh Yorkshire air, set in Bradford, real and gritty about drug addiction and messed up lives, all from inside the head of Billie, well put together and never too awful or distressing to read. ( )

Wow! What a book! Reads as a journal written by a West Yorkshire woman in her 40’s looking back on her childhood, teenage years and young adulthood. A wild child of the ‘70’s, biker chick and drug abuser, the book details the dark thoughts and actions of a troubled child who grew to be a troubled woman. While gruesome and dark, it’s also very poignant and doesn’t leave one feeling hopeless. Denby knows how to use words as the powerful tools that they are quite masterfully. A+ ( )
