Preface and Acknowledgments This author's research in this area started in 1976 with a study of the church books at Niederhochstadt and Oberhochstadt, two Palatine villages combined today into one called Hochstadt.
Introduction Emigration from the Palatinate had its roots in the destruction of the Thirty Years' War. This war can be summed up in three words: plunder, hunger and pestilence. The war began in 1618 and gradually spread over central Europe with certain regions suffering more than others.¹ The part of the Palatinate covered by this volume experienced the horrors of war mainly in 1621 and 1622, and again from 1632 to 1636.
