Doesn't compare well to [a:Steig's|26874|William Steig|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/authors/1201030267p2/26874.jpg] better books, and doesn't have much of a story nor would it really stand alone without the first book about [b:Doctor De Soto|817316|Doctor De Soto|William Steig|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1312018676s/817316.jpg|1595522]. I was actually tempted to rate it just two stars, but it does however have the charm of both [a:Steig's|26874|William Steig|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/authors/1201030267p2/26874.jpg] unmistakable illustrations and the unique vocabulary, even if again it has none of the creativity or humanity of the first [b:Doctor De Soto|817316|Doctor De Soto|William Steig|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1312018676s/817316.jpg|1595522] or for that matter my personal favorites, such as the fairy tale of [b:Sylvester and the Magic Pebble|457762|Sylvester and the Magic Pebble|William Steig|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1328018633s/457762.jpg|446280]. So, a heck of a lot better than the average children's book, but still very disappointing for a title by [a:William Steig|26874|William Steig|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/authors/1201030267p2/26874.jpg]. An elephant in Africa has a terrible toothache and the only doctor who can help him is Dr. De Soto. He and his wife sail a way to Africa to help him. They find themselves battleing with the animals of the wild, but they are determined to help the elephant and find a way to make it happen.
