When the Ramones recorded their debut album in 1976, it heralded the true birth of punk rock. Fast and frenetic in their leather jackets and torn jeans, the Ramones gave voice to the disaffected youth of the seventies and eighties, influenced countless bands, and inspired the counterculture for decades to come. Born Jeffry Hyman of Queens, New York, Joey Ramone was the quirky, extraordinary lead singer and cofounder of the band. Hiding his face behind signature sunglasses and a mop of dark hair, he helped define punk's early image, and his two-decade-plus tenure as the Ramones' front man made him unforgettable. Told by Joey's brother, Mickey Leigh, here is an intimate look at the turbulent life of one of America's greatest--and unlikeliest--music icons.--From publisher description.… (más)

Joey and Mickey's (Jeffrey and Mitchell's) childhood and adolescence make for very interesting reading, especially for those of us from Queens and of a certain age.

Sadly, Leigh spends a lot of time moaning about how cruel Joey was but then patting himself on the back for taking the high road and always forgiving his messed up celebrity, OCD brother.

But keeping in mind that most of the insider Ramones history has been written by Dee Dee, it's good to get a perspective from someone less addled. ( )

Here's another one I'm trying to figure out. Leigh spends the majority of his time on his own history with that of his more famous brother being secondary. In its own light, Leigh history is not that compelling. However, the insights into life with a famous sibling are quite interesting. Good read. ( )

"I Slept With Joey Ramone" combines a close-up look at Joey with an authoritative history of the band... For all the hurts Leigh suffered, he has done right by his brother as both Jeff Hyman and Joey Ramone.
