They are summoned by a polar bear to come follow him for some reason. They get their kayak and gear all ready and head out to the ocean where they see that almost all the ice has melted. They see what the polar bear was calling them for. There is one polar bear cub left and he wanted them to save it. They bring it back home and name it Pilluk, meaning survivor. ( ) This is a picture that describes how a family discovered the last baby polar bear. A tad difficult to understand for younger children, the underlying context explains how global warming is affecting habitats of animals that live in cold climates. I would use this for second grade up. It is great to tie into science. This picture book tells the story of Tigluck and his grandmother, Aka, and how they found the last polar bear baby. At least that’s what the actual book is about. The subtext is a more difficult topic, especially for children: what happens to polar bears—and other creatures—with Global Warming on the rise? Without guilt or preaching, this simple tale is a great example of what will happen to our world if we continue on the way we have been. It mentions trash in the ocean, and guillemots, seabirds laying eggs in old crates and drums in a matter of fact style. This is an important lesson for children. This book is appropriate and engaging, and made me cry. Color illustrations are beautiful. Ages 4 – 8. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
Tigluk and his grandmother paddle out into the Arctic Ocean where they find a young polar bear whose mother has died because of the changes brought about by the warming climate, and they bring the cub back to their town so they can teach it how to survive in a changing world.
