Ashes takes place in Berlin, Germany in the years 1932 and 1933, the time right before and during the beginning of Adolf Hitler’s reign over Germany. At this time, Gabby is a thirteen-year-old girl who is struggling dealing with all of the prejudice and hate that she is witnessing around her. She feels shame for the events that she has witnessed and refuses to give in to the hateful actions even though they are the status quo. In 1932 Berlin, Gaby Schramm witnesses the beginning of Hitler's rise to power, as soldiers fill the streets, the family's friend, Albert Einstein, leaves the country and Gaby's favourite teacher tries to get her to join the Hitler Youth. With a compelling plot, a strong sense of place, and vivid characters, this novel brings to life Hitler's rise to power and its impact on a German family forced to reconsider its loyalties. Lasky starts with background on the events preceding her story set in Berlin in 1932/33 with the rise of Hitler. Back notes contain short bio info about many of the real characters woven into this fictional title. Potentially good for homeschoolers looking for history with story, but does have a few instances of foul language and there is a illegitimate pregnancy sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
