Ashes takes place in Berlin, Germany in the years 1932 and 1933, the time right before and during the beginning of Adolf Hitler’s reign over Germany. At this time, Gabby is a thirteen-year-old girl who is struggling dealing with all of the prejudice and hate that she is witnessing around her. She feels shame for the events that she has witnessed and refuses to give in to the hateful actions even though they are the status quo.

Historical Fiction Novel Discussion

This is historical fiction at its best. Just when you think you can't possibly read another book about Hitler's Germany, Ashes comes along. This is a story that's never been told (at least not for teens) and it's told beautifully. A great read! ( )
