Randall Munroe describesxkcd as a webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language. While it's practically required reading in the geek community, xkcd fans are as varied as the comic's subject matter. This book creates laughs from science jokes on one page to relationship humor on another. xkcd: volume 0 is the first book from the immensely popular webcomic with a passionate readership (just Google "xkcd meetup"). The artist selected personal and fan favorites from his first 600 comics. It was lovingly assembled from high-resolution original scans of the comics (the mouseover text is discreetly included), and features a lot of doodles, notes, and puzzles in the margins. xkcd Volume 0 is a collection of comics from the xkcd webcomic, with added notes and doodles. Munroe states upfront that you're not really getting much that you couldn't read for free online - this is definitely intended for xkcd diehards.

It's xkcd, so it's generally at least decent, although I am not smart/nerdy enough to understand a good half of the jokes and references in this volume. Still, there were a few of my favorites, including the kitty graph, and I appreciated the DRM ones (which are, sadly, still applicable).

If you're interested in the history of xkcd and how it got started, Munroe's introduction is worth a read.

I found half the comics hilarious; the other half...I clearly needed to have some experience...any experience...with higher level math, physics, and computer programming (and the online culture of the Aughts). There were a few I could enjoy somewhat distantly, and I trust they're super funny. :) About a third of the way through, it dawned on me that I've been enjoying random xkcd comics over the years. I'll certainly read more.

How have I gone this long without experiencing xkcd? Being in IT, I've seen the name xkcd and even indulged in a stray comic here and there, but for some reason--perhaps because of its popularity--I haven't really gotten into it. Well, those days are gone. Now I, too, incessantly refresh the xkcd page every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning. I find not only a kindred spirit through the shared focus of technology and everyday conundrums; it seems that Randall also grew up on Calvin and Hobbes collections! With such a large repertoire of work and the subjectivity I inevitably bring to any book, there are some duds; but for the most part, I these comics able to express something that connects with my experiences and makes me smile. xkcd takip etmekten asla sıkılmadığım webcomiclerden birisi. ( )
