The Search is a historical fiction graphic novel. This title is an introduction to the events that occurred in the Nazi Germany. A survivor of the holocaust tells of the journey that led her away from her family into many different hiding spots and finally back to her home in Amsterdam. Will she ever find her parents or any of her family from her life before the Holocaust? While this story is well written the illustrations do not seem to keep up with the story. The illustrations are Archie like with characters that seem to have the same expression throughout the story. Because of this, I found the story was for a more advanced audience then the illustrations. ( )

My Response - This story would work as background reading in the middle grades as well as information reading for children. The pictures really add to the compelling story and keep the reader interested in solving the mystery.

Curriculum - As above, use for background reading or introduction to a history unit. Students will find a lot of facts included in the story of Grandma Esther. There is a factual portrait of life at Camp Westerbork and in Auschwitz. Great for students who need a high-interest presentation.
