This book is a collection of short stories written by H. G. Wells. Containing over fifty tales, "The Short Stories of H. G. Wells" constitutes a must-have for lovers of the short storm form and is not to be missed by fans of Wells' fantastic work. Herbert George Wells (1866 - 1946) was a prolific English writer who wrote in a variety of genres, including the novel, politics, history, and social commentary. Today, he is perhaps best remembered for his contributions to the science fiction genre thanks to such novels as "The Time Machine" (1895), "The Invisible Man" (1897), and "The War of the Worlds" (1898). "The Father of Science Fiction" was also a staunch socialist, and his later works are increasingly political and didactic. The stories include: "The Stolen Bacillus," "The Flowering of the Strange Orchid," "In the Avu Observatory," "The Triumphs of a Taxidermist," "A Deal In Ostriches," "Through a Window," "The Temptation of Harringay," "The Flying Man," "The Diamond Maker," "Aepyornis Island," "The Remarkable Case of Davidson's Eyes," "The Lord of the Dynamos," and more. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this book now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.… (más)

Brilliant stories from the first master of S.F. It's some time since I read them but these still stand out in my mind. The Time Machine (of course), The Story of the Last Trump (Wells was a friend of C.K.Chesterton despite they holding opposed views on religion), The Man Who Could Work Miracles, and The Magic Shop (A theme that crops up in the Harry Potter books). H. G. excelled, in my opinion, in his short stories which are brilliantly constructed, extremely humorous, touching and intelligent. My decrepit 3rd print-run edition from 1927 was already falling apart when I bought it and is sadly missing some pages at the end (not sure how many) and has no dust-jacket. Or spine, for that matter. Still, I love the mouldy old thing. Adding to the joy it brings me is the penned message at the front: "Eileen. Sept. 1927. Many Happy Returns and the Best of Luck. Yours. Jack." Good old Jack for giving Eileen such a lovely birthday present. ( )

There are multiple editions here. At the very least is The Short Stories of H. G. Wells published by Ernest Benn (first in 1927, with an 11th impression in 1941). All impressions of this contain 63 stories; Short Stories published by the Folio Society in 1990 containing 22 stories. (All the stories in the Folio edition are in the Benn version.)
