This book tells the story of a family that live on a farm who have many sheep. The son is worried about their safety when he hears them squeal, he immediately knows they coyotes must be around their farm. When he tells his dad, his dad gets his gun preparing to kill them, but when the son sees that the coyote has a family of cubs, he begs the dad not too saying "they're a family!". The dad decided not to kill the family of coyotes because alike the coyotes, they are family too. Instead they decide to get a dog to keep them away. I think this book does a great job explaining the needs of wild animals and how they get their food, but in a way that does not come off as scary to children. It is both informative and interesting to them. ( )

A family has sheep on their farm. The boy sees a coyote at the edge of the forest and when a sheep goes missing the father blames the coyote. They go looking for the coyote in the forest, but when they see the coyote with his family the father decides not to shoot it. He will get a sheep dog instead. Positive resolution, compassion

A young boy discovers tracks that lead him to a coyote but he doesn't do anything about it. When a sheep from the farm is killed, the father and son go after the coyote to find out it was providing food for his family. When the father decides not to kill it, he explains to his son how similar the coyotes are to them, both having a family. The father decides to get a sheep dog to keep the coyote away from their sheep and both families are able to go about their lives. The pictures are beautiful and very life-like and I definitely enjoyed that. ( )
