Chess is back and has more troubles than she has pills to counter. Which is saying something. ( ) This book was painful to read. Heart-wrenchingly painful, to the degree that I had to seriously consider whether or not to finish reading it, because it was starting to seep into my daily life and really bring me down. And it wasn't just that it was painful; it was that Chess was doing it all to herself. The only thing that really kept me going was the slight hope that Chess would figure it all out and dig herself out of her own hole. And that's what's going to keep me going to the next book. Unique worldbuilding, interesting linguistics, gripping story. Worth it, if only for hope. That was really intense. Almost too intense in a couple of places. Stacia Kane lets Chess' addiction speak for itself, rather than sermonizing about it and it makes some parts of the story feel incredibly raw, like watching the latter half of Requiem for a Dream. I wanted to put the book down almost as much as I wanted to finish reading. I am kind of scared to read the next book, even though I've already bought it. Won't stop me though, I'm reading [b:Wrong Ways Down|17374209|Wrong Ways Down (Downside Ghosts, #1.5)|Stacia Kane|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1371653450s/17374209.jpg|24162407] now and I'm starting [b:City of Ghosts|7352840|City of Ghosts (Downside Ghosts, #3)|Stacia Kane|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1327897476s/7352840.jpg|6912417] immediately thereafter, even though I've got 2 other books to finish and a pile of stuff from the library. I haven't seen anything quite like the world Stacia Kane has created with Downside Ghosts, and I like what she's done. I appreciate the irony of an anti-religion organization/government that calls itself The Church and runs itself like hyper-organized religion, and I'm curious where she'll take that. I'm also wondering what is going on in the rest of the world. Is The Church everywhere? Did Haunted Week happen everywhere in the world? She might have said in the first book, but I can't remember. I hope that's information that's still to unfold. Talk about your flawed protagonists. Just about every decision Chess makes is the wrong one, but I still like the character so much and wish for better things for her. I love Terrible I also hope to see Oliver Fletcher in future installments. He This second book in the Downside Ghosts series was a strong follow-up to Unholy Ghosts. Recommended for people looking for something different in their urban fantasy. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
