In this robust, elegantly plotted, and ultimately life-affirming novel, Zoe Whittall presents a dazzling portrait of the Millennial Generation-the twenty-five-year olds who grew up on anti-anxiety meds, text-messaging each other truncated emotional reactions, unsure of what's public and what's private. Holding Still explores an unusual love triangle involving Billy, a former teen idol, now an anxiety-ridden agoraphobic; Josh, a shy transgendered paramedic who travels the city patching up damaged bodies; and Amy, a fashionable filmmaker coping with her first broken heart. With this extraordinary novel, Whittall gives us startlingly real portraits of three unforgettable characters and proves herself to be one of our most talented writers.… (más)

I wasn't liking this much until about two thirds of the way through, but somehow by the end I was liking it a lot. It looks like it's going to be yet another book about people being mean to one another for no reason except that's the human condition, doncha know, but then sometimes instead of resenting each other for no reason at all they decide to love each other for no reason at all, and whoops, suddenly you have high literary fiction where people are a bit optimistic about the human condition. I really wanted to like this book but it mostly fell flat for me. As my partner reflected back to me after I described the book: it sounds like you are so starved for queer content you will finish a bad book just because you see yourself in it. I will probably try to find more queer themed fiction that I find to be better written/more interesting.

One positive for me was that the book didn't really have a clear trajectory or resolution. I don't always enjoy that but in this case I did.

Living in Toronto during my twenties this book totally brought me back. Love Zoe Whittall. A great Canadian writer of my generation. ( )

I completely enjoyed this. It was well-written and strong, and the book left me wanting to know more about the characters and their lives beyond the book. Suffice to say, this thoroughly engrossed me every day as I read it on the subway, and Zoe Whittall remains one of my new favourite Canadian writers (folks should also check out Bottle Rocket Hearts!). Though we live surrounded by evidence of our own importance...deep down we know that we are merely tiny particles in a vast interconnected chain of life, but for the sake of our immediate survival, we don't focus on that fact...In moments of relaxation, passion, joy, and fear or when we are confronted by death, injury or emergencies, this larger context is suddenly reopened for an instant, like a never headled wound. -- Allen Shawn, Wish I Could Be There: Notes from a Phobic Life

The planes move in, the towers collapse, and people react with heartfelt shock and horrow. You cry because you're sad and frightened. And then, before you know it, the images are repeated in slow motion with the Samuel Barber soundtrack and a close-up photograph of a singed teddy bear. Then you cry because somebody is making you and you wind up feeling confused and manipulate, like your own feelings weren't quite good enough and you needed professional help. -- David Sedaris, This American Life
