ENGLISH DESCRIPTION In today's fast-paced world of competitive workplaces and turbulent economic conditions, each of us is searching for effective tools that can help us to manage, adapt, and strike out ahead of the pack. I picked this book to read because I'm trying to read all of the books I own. I didn't think I would get through it so fast (it took 2 days but probably could've taken less had I been in the right headspace). I enjoyed how easy it was to read, since the language was more casual than technical. I also liked how it set up easy to follow guidelines for all of the different parts of emotional intelligence.

I couldn't help but wonder about the differences between gender and EQ ability, which they address slightly in the epilogue. I also couldn't help but wonder how much has changed in the 14 years since the book was published.

Overall, it was an interesting read. I may go back and actually follow along with the homework and activities listed in it some time in the future. ( )

Best value in this book is that it provides an EQ assessment. Good book to coach someone through the four quadrants (Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Management) and help them focus on their weakest quadrant. ( )

It's okay. The first few chapters are very skimmable, and are taken up with a lot of anecdotal padding about example individuals that doesn't really address how emotional intelligence can be developed. Basically, the first chapters can be distilled down to: Emotional intelligence is an important quality in business and in life. The chapters that break down the four aspects of emotional intelligence and tools to develop each aspect are more useful and also more interesting. ( )

A solid start.

Emotional intelligence is a buzzword nowadays, due to the dearth of interpersonal conflict. However, it isn't a new thing. Moreover, it isn't a static thing - something that some people have and others do not. I used to lament over the fact that I don't have XYZ social skill for whatever reason. However, this book showed me that many social skills can indeed be learned. In fact, many taken for granted when we have them and are clearly noticed when they are missing.

The book itself describes the four dimensions of Emotional Intelligence: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. While Bradberry doesn't go into great detail into each one, he does describe them enough for you to understand what you likely intuitively know. Further he gives several ways to improve your Emotional Intelligence, even if you are already strong in certain areas. The book also includes a survey by which you can discover your level of Emotional Intelligence, or Emotional Quotient (EQ). However, I got this from the library so the survey materials were not available.

Nevertheless, this was a helpful book. I intend to purchase it for my own growth as a person and a leader. ( )
