When Captain Scott made his dash to the Pole, Dr. Levick remained in winter quarters and devoted himself to a study of the animal life of the Antarctic, and the curious social and community life of the penguins in their rookeries. "We cannot praise too highly the patient and careful observation which is evident in every page of this delightful book." -The Atheneum "The book verily is quite a rare little treat, and we like the natural way, the jolly way, it is written." -Saturday Review "A delightful little book....The author is Dr. G. Murray Levick, of the Royal Navy. Dr. Levick was the zoologist to the Scott expedition. His book is, in a way, a tribute to the funny and friendly creatures who did so much to cheer him and his companions during their two long years in the far South." -The Nation "Interesting study of the habits of these curious and amusing birds by the zoologist of the Scott expedition." --New York State Library Education Department Bulletin "Life near the poles is a heart-breaking monotony, slash with sudden dilemma, danger and death. Here is an honest transcript of it that partakes of all these elements." -Life Magazine "The author was zoologist to the British Antarctic expedition, 1910-1913, and he writes an interesting account of these South-polar inhabitants. He says that when seen for the first time an 'Adelie penguin gives you the impression of a very smart little man in an evening dress suit.'" -Booklist "Nice, affectionate, wobbly beasts described with much human sympathy." -Independent "We have to congratulate the author on his well-told story." -The New York Times "The merit of the book lies in the detailed and minute accuracy of the author's observations." -Spectator… (más)

A charming and informative little book; the author immediately gained my heart when he stopped the heartless sailors from kicking the penguins. Can you imagine? These little birds are so innocent and beautiful; poor things, to have to encounter humans after being left alone for centuries! Adorable pictures. ( )

A delightful account of the Adélie penguin colony at Cape Adare during the 1911-1912 summer season of the Terra Nova expedition. Levick was a keen observer with a warm sense of humor and obvious fondness for the penguins. A particularly amusing penguin pastime he describes is "floe riding", in which penguins line up at the windward end of their land, cram as many of themselves as possible on a small floe passing by, ride it to the end or their land, get off, and march back up to catch another ride. Voilà! A penguin amusement park ride.

Although Levick's photos are not included in the Kindle version I read, they can be seen in the online version at
