I though this book would be good to use in the classroom when you teach children about American Indians. You could use this book as a mentor text for the students to get ideas about some famous Indians. I would read my class this book and then have them choose an Indian from the book to research more. Overall this was a good book and I think children would enjoy reading it. ( ) "We are the Many: A Picture Book of American Indians" tells the stories of 16 influential Native American people, firstly by recreating a moment in that person's life, and then explaining the work and significance of that moment to the big picture. Tisquantum (Squanto) saved the Pilgrims from winter starvation. Konwatsi'tsienni (Molly Brant) aided British soldiers in the American Revolutionary war, in hopes they would stop Americans from stealing more land from her people. Shunka-Ishnala was a historian for his people. Sacajawea acted as a guide, food gatherer, and interpreter on the Lewis & Clark expedition. Asiyahola (Osceola) brought his people many victories when the Americans sought to take Seminole land. Susan La Flesche Picotte was a doctor to her people, plowing through snow and dust storms to aid them. Helena, Ida, and Lyda Conley defended the graves of their family and ancestors, by both living there to stop intruders nad by taking their case to U.S. courts. Watha Huck (Jim Thorpe) was an Olympic gold medalist. Maria and Julian Martinez recreated and preserved an ancient pottery tradition. William McCabe was a Navajo code talker. Maria Tallchief was a famous ballerina. Wilma Mankiller was the first female chief of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, and completed many projects to help make her people more self-reliant. Sherman Alexie is a renowned author and screen writer. Each story states the person's tribe, the year they were born, and the year they died. The author and illustrators took special care to maintain historical accuracy by referencing and cross-referencing primary and secondary sources, as well as speaking with current Indigenous scholars and historians about facts and pronunciations. There is a pronunciation guide at the end of the book. The writing is clear and could be easily understood by young students; the author also references the current names for places the stories take in for students to identify with. The illustrations are particularly beautiful, and help set the scene of the book and bring life to the characters. What a great discovery. There are well known (Sacajawea, Osceola, Jim Thorpe & Sherman Alexie) and obscure people celebrated in this book. The stories are very short, but filled with facts. I know my first and second grade students would love this book. The illustrations are beautiful too. This book is written in such a way that you could read one or all short passages to your class. Each hero depicted has made a different contribution to their people. This book could be used during a history, science, literature or art lesson because the contributions cover so many different areas. This book shines light on the unknown famous American Indians throughout history. Many in this book have never gotten the recognition they derserve. Others in this book have been victims to racism and hatred. Each chapter is named after an improtant American Indian that left his mark on the world. This book would be good to give someone if the knew little about any famous American Indians. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
