Eight-year old Luke is a wonderful child with a genius IQ and Burke is able to connect with him, given his own horrific childhood (raised in numerous foster homes and a wizened veteran of reform school.) While Luke is inquisitive, playful, and friendly to some, he has a very dark side and multiple personalities, resulting from torture and sexual abuse by his parents and their satanic cult. Burke convinces the D.A. to prosecute the cult, but she is overruled, forcing Burke to provide his own special brand of retribution. The downside is that Burke can only find the cult through a clairvoyant Haitian voodoo cult, with Burke gathering his crew for an mighty, unorthodox assault. The highlight of this book was the introduction and subsequent tutelage of loyal Clarence, a young and personable gangsta. ( )
