Reve's ironic, self-deprecatory storytelling technique is entertaining and sometimes illuminating, but it can get on your nerves after a while. The narrator in this novella, as usual, is the writer Gerard R. from the city of A. He describes how on a Friday in the 1960s, he went to the southern port of V. (which we're evidently supposed to recognise as Vlissingen) to give a reading, was invited to stay the night by one of the ladies from the literary society, and, although his preference is normally for men, ended up in bed with her. So far, so good, but then the narrator becomes fascinated with a photograph of the woman's German boyfriend, and we get into a silly plot of deceptions and supernatural coincidences. The narrator then jumps outside the frame of the story to explain that these supernatural elements might really have happened, or might just be there to make the whole thing into a closed story. Hmmm.

Worth reading because it's Reve, and Reve is always worth reading, but you can see why this was turned down as a Boekenweek gift. ( )

In deze boeiende en spannende novelle (geschreven als Boekenweekgeschenk, maar als zodanig geweigerd) vertelt de hoofdpersoon aan zijn vriend een verhaal. Het gaat over een kortstondige relatie die hij gehad heeft met een vrouw. Het verleden van deze vrouw is tamelijk duister en wordt stukje voor stukje onthuld. Het blijkt dat ze reeds driemaal getrouwd is geweest en dat haar drie echtgenoten allemaal 'onverwacht' om het leven zijn gekomen. Verder is de hoofdpersoon gefascineerd door een in Duitsland wonende jongen met wie de vrouw ook een verhouding heeft. Wanneer hij beseft dat ook hij het slachtoffer dreigt te worden van deze vrouw, neemt hij de benen. Reve heeft met 'De vierde man' een prachtig verhaal geschreven, vol vaart, humor en mysterie, waarmee hij voor de zoveelste keer meesterlijk aantoont wat een veelzijdig auteur hij is. Ook succesvol verfilmd door Paul Verhoeven. ( )
