We start with a foreshadow to the Apollo 11, but we actually start with the cold war and how it started the space race; First the cold war starts, Russia send a satellite into space, and thus started the space race. Then we're told about how Russia sent a dog into space and the U.S sending the monkey, but Russia beat the U.S when it comes to sending a person into space but it wasn't over because the spaceship didn't reach the moon. Next is Apollo 1 and how it burned in the testing session, but the U.S wanted to reach the moon so they turned to German engineer Wernher von Braun who then came up with the Saturn V. Finally we reach Apollo 11 were after 10 mistakes we reach zero hour and hundreds of millions of people watched as it lifted off! Finally the eagle lands it take over 6 hours to open the hatch and Neil Armstrong says his famous line, then returns to Earth.

I gave it a 4 because the book has great facts but it would be hard to write about 3 subjects in one paragraph. Also the book is nonfiction (note this bias) and I don't like nonfiction books. To add to my score is I didn't like how there were myths in this book. Finally the biggest problem is.............. that the book keeps switching from myths, facts, and the space race so I had to focus on the Space race because that was easiest to write a review for. This book talks about more things about the moon than I ever heard in my life. It talks about the Apollo 11, the theory on how scientist think the moon came to be, and even a moon godess. Moon by Stewart Ross is a book that is not just about one topic but a lot of them. Found in the book, scientist believe that the moon was created 4.6 billion years ago. It was created because a planet the size of Mars slapped into Earth, the rising paricles created a ring around Earth which created the moon. This book also talks about how the Apollo 11 lifts off.
I liked this book, but it didnt get the full 5 star rating because it talked about way too many topics to get my head wrapped around one to actually write a summary. I think if they just sticked to one, two, or maybe even three topics it would have gotten a better rating from me. I liked this book because it took up some topics that actually interested me, like the moon godess or how scienctist made a theory on how the moon was made. It had the story about the Apollo 11 and even the moons matter. It also didnt get the full 5 star rating because its not a fiction book. I like to read fiction books rather than non-fiction books because I believe that fiction books are better than non-fiction books. This book is facinating and interesting, but could do so much better and has the potential to become greatness! ( )

This is an excellent reference book on the Moon-- one of the most simulatneously elaborate and interesting that I have ever seen. Every moon-related topic imaginable is addressed-- the surface of the moon, moon phases, moonlight, ancient explanations, muslim foundations, moon missions, moon in film and literature-- is presented. This book would lend itself well to an interdisciplinary exploration of any moon-related topic. While designed to be read a few pages or topics at a time, it could easily be read from start to finish as well. ( )
