I enjoyed this book of a great Australian hero, although sadly he is not very well known today. An Australian rules footballer and all round sportsman joins the Royal Australian Air Force in 1940, trains as a fighter pilot and goes to Britain to serve with 452 Squadron alongside the Irishman Finucane. Who was the British Commonwealths third highest fighter Ace during WWII and Bluey Truscott's best friend. He served on Spitfires over Britain, France and the Channel engaging in large and small aerial combat against the Germans. Then when Japan enters the war he returns to Australia, converts to Kitthawks and fights at Milne Bay, before being killed the next year in a flying accident, aged 26.

I liked that the book was written in the 1950's as you get that feel for the language of the day, the way things were spoken and referred too. It gives it a great feel for its time and place. Recommended to those interested in the Air war over Europe and in the Pacific during WWII and for those interested in a little known Australian hero. ( )
