My interest petered out toward the end. Also, I know the narrator was supposed to be uneducated but a little consistency (I'm not even asking for correctness!) with use of lie & lay would have been nice. One last thing: there were almost NO hyphens in the whole book, and I missed them sorely. ( )

Whoa. Just....whoa. I don't even know how to articulate what I'm feeling right now, having just finished this book. It's devastatingly gorgeous. Read it. ( )

This is the story of Sarah, beginning in childhood as she travels with her family across the U.S. Western Territories. The adventure and hardship hooked me immediately. Sarah, raised with only male siblings, becomes a strong, determined young woman.

Where Sarah ends up, and how she gets there-well you will have to read the book to find out. I will say-this book has a bit of something for all readers. A Family Saga, Romance, a history of the Southwestern States, before they were States.

While reading, I discovered there is a second book-however the reviews on it are no where near the praise this one got. I will put on the TBR though, I loved Sarah enough to re-visit at some point.

The book is not for everyone-it is written in diary form. Each entry dated, some long some short. At the beginning of the book Sarah's writing is choppy and uneducated-but the words grow with Sarah and you cannot help respecting the woman Sarah becomes. ( )

This was based on the author's family history, I really enjoyed this book, will now order the sequel. It also made me so thankful I was not born yet as the settlers faced so many hardships. ( )

A storm is rolling in, and that always makes me a little sad and wistful so I got it in my head to set to paper all these things that have got us this far on our way through this heathen land.

No one can eat. We have drank our tears for food.
I am making a rag rug with scraps the Maldonados gave me from all their children’s old worn out clothes. I told them what a happy rug it would be as it carries all the children’s laughter with it
It seems as if I can only think if I write my journal, it just connects the part of my head that is busy doing things with the part that is busy thinking about everything else.
... our home is Arizona Territory. There’s too much blood spilt on that land to leave it. It costs to live there, and we’ve both paid a price.
Now he is back, and I feel like my arm or something has been missing and now is returned to me. It is a hard feeling to describe, it is like the smell after a rain, and a paper journal will not hold the feeling of it.
