Well-written and *extremely* detailed. I could recognize some of the characters from the art world: Nan Goldin, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Rene Ricard, while the protagonist's girlfriend seems to be No Wave-legend Pat Place. Could make a good movie--think Goodfellas but about heroin and starring mostly women. Devoid of the stream-of-consciousness rambling that accompanies many stories in which drugs are at the forefront, Yablonsky's narrator gives us the straight dope (pun intended) about how a regular girl might come to use heroin, begin dealing, become a junkie, and get busted. The book is fascinating and realistic, which leads me to believe Yablonsky might either be very close to her story or be extremely skilled at research. The writing is very matter-of-fact, and our unnamed narrator could be anyone. The reader identifies and empathizes with her. The consequences of her use are neither minimized or exaggerated. Very well-written and engaging. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
To our heroines, junk is a party drug, a solace and a sexual liberator - not a crime. So it seems only natural that they begin dealing, and it's quite a shock when someone sets them up. Yablonsky looks at the moral cost of heroin addiction. No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |
