This is an amazing real-life story of three Aboriginal girls, sisters Molly and Daisy and their cousin Gracie, one of whom is the author's mother.
The girls are taken from their mother and extended family and community and sent many miles south to the Moore River native Settlement near Perth in 1931. Their home is at Jigalong on the edge of the Sandy Desert. The route they were taken on to get to the settlement was by train, ship and car, and very different from the horse and cart they were used to. The way home was by foot and overland with Molly the eldest leading the younger two. They spent weeks as fugitives of the WA government as they avoided recapture and lived off the land, using the Rabbit-proof fence as a guide for direction.
There is a glossary of Mardujara words at the beginning of the book and a map showing the complete journey south and back again. ( )
