I would have liked more story--the end felt a bit rushed, but enjoyable nonetheless. ( ) ~Spoilers if you've not read the other books in the series~ The battle against the Horsekin has finally reached a head. The fate of the Deverry and the Westfolk hinges on this final battle. Rhodri, if the dweomer is not removed soon is in danger of loosing his human soul forever and will be doomed to live out the rest of his life as a dragon, while Dallandra and the other dweomer masters are also on a mission to find a way to move Haen Marn. Like the novels that preceded this one, there is a lot going on in this book. It switches back and forth between this time, and Rhodri's earliest incarnation before the founding of Deverry. It's been so long since I read any of these books that I found myself needing to refer to the chart of incarnations multiple times to remind myself who was who and who had been who in past lives. While I still enjoyed the book, I am beginning to think that my taste for epic fantasy is waning. I did not enjoy this book as much as I did others in the series, though I can not identify any particular reason. Given that I've not enjoyed other epic fantasies as much as I have in the past, I believe that the fault lies with me and not the books themselves. Overall, it was a good conclusion to the series and I'm grateful that the author chose to include an "author's note" at the end to let us know what happens to those characters whose stories are not neatly wrapped up at the tale's conclusion. If you have read the other books in the series, I highly recommend you finish it with this one. For those who haven't read the book, if you are a fan of epic fantasy with a Celtic flair, then this is a good series to pick up. Be warned though, it is a long series and if you leave long periods of time between reading books in a series, you may need to refresh your memory before picking up the next.

Read Katharine Kerr's posts on the Penguin Blog. The Horsekin are assembling along Prince Dar's northern border, and the Deverry alliance doesn't have the men or resources to prevent their enemies from moving into the wilderness areas known as the Ghostlands. But then the Dwrgi folk and the dragons come to Dar's aid, tipping the balance in their favor and offering Dar's people a chance to defeat the Horsekin once and for all.
