Our return yesterday left us with the worst jet-lag either of us has ever experienced and this pop up book was the most complicated reading I was capable of before passing out on the couch for the duration.

But boy, what a pop up book it is. I have 2 others in this series, one on Dinosaurs and one on Megafauna, and this one is at least as good as the others. The art work is amazing, and the explanations are perfect for young readers and old readers alike; I especially appreciate the pronunciation guide for each of the ancient beasts. I learned more than a little bit while reading/flapping the pages around and making 'nom nom nom' noises. The cats were super impressed with my ancient beasts impersonations. ( )

This pop-up was created for children ages 5 and up, but is not for the faint of heart! The pop-up illustrations are hyper-detailed cartoonist versions of what these animals might have looked like when they were alive. Along with these illustrations is information about these sea monsters that give insight to their lives. Super interactive and captivating!

Very interesting. The language it a bit difficult for younger readers, but I believe middle school students with a bit of gumption and an admirable vocabulary would very much enjoy this book as well as the incredible pop-ups. The pop-ups are truly what make this book magnificent. ( )

This informative pop-up book provides an overview of prehistoric monsters of the sea. The pop-up illustrations are the obvious star of the book. Intricately detailed, large, and using painted paper that seems to take some cues from the work of Eric Carle, these colorful monsters eat up most of the page space, and most of the attention. Supplemented by mini-booklets that focus in on more specific topics, such as the shape of a shark's tooth, the book is packed with text. The subject matter of the book is much more broad than one might initially expect. Shark-enthusiast readers may find the book somewhat disappointing for this reason, as Sabuda and Reinhart devote only one spread to the titular monster, but the impressive scope and attention to detail in the work make this a minor quibble. In some instances, however, the size of the impressive pop-ups obscure the text, making it hard to read. Overall, however, Sabuda and Reinhart manage to harmonize the text and pop-ups well, creating an entertaining and beautiful look into the lives of the old monsters of the deep. ( )

I wonder how much a book like this cost? I'm gonna look it up on google right now. it says 27.99 at toys or us. Thats managable i guess, for a birthday gift or christmass gift. The pop outs are worth it. very textured, and they move in all directions! ( )
