La solución final es un inteligente pasatiempo policiaco, un homenaje a Conan Doyle y un ajuste de cuentas a su más universal personaje, Sherlock Holmes. Conocedor de la historia que dice que Conan Doyle acabó por aborrecer a Holmes, Chabon manipula las claves del género y juega irónicamente con la imposibilidad de escribir una saga al idear un personaje, un investigador, que raya los 90 años y que vive retirado en su casa de la campiña inglesa dedicando sus últimos días a la apicultura. Un niño judío alemán, refugiado en Gran Bretaña; un loro que le acompaña posado sobre su hombro dictando inverosímiles listas de números y recitando poemas de Goethe o Schiller; una muerte violenta con el secuestro del loro de por medio… Todo ello conforma la trama de este hábil juego literario, peculiar y mordaz, que sobrepasa las reglas del género detectivesco.
