A collection of previously unpublished stories, Nameless Places is largely a mediocre affair despite the inclusion of big names like Carl Jacobi, Lin Carter and Ramsey Campbell. Still, a few of the pieces are memorable: "The Real Road to the Church" by English horror surrealist Robert Aickman (an excellent foretaste of his own collection Cold Hand in Mine, published later in 1975); Arthur Byron Cover's eerie "Lifeguard," which could almost be mistaken for Night Shift-era Stephen King; and Robert E. Gilbert's "Walls of Yellow Clay," a fascinating, disquieting study of mental disintegration in the guise of a sci-fi yarn.
Long out of print (like most of the Arkham House catalog), and probably not worth tracking down for the casual horror/sci-fi reader. Tim Kirk's beautiful jacket illustration makes it a desirable item for collectors, however. ( )
