The Frome must be one of the smallest rivers with the largest fish in England, an excellent combination. A fish of 30-40 lbs is nothing uncommon and with a wind behind him I am sure a German soldier could spit across it, though God forbid that he would have the chance!

We don't use minnows at Strathaird and we were quite properly forbidden to do so as children, but a small fish mounted on a spinning tackle is very deadly. When the fish wouldn't look at a fly we were occasionally tempted, and I remember the code name for the performance was a 'teal and green' so that the family should not discover that we had been using a minnow!
