Harry Silver has already had a lifetime of trouble from ordinary Berserkers, the automated killing machines programmed an age ago to denude the galaxy of life. And now one of these machines has gone rogue-and kidnapped his own family. What worse devilry will a deviant killing machine attempt? How will he stop it? And even if he can, will he ever see his family alive again?… (más)

It's always fun to read an old-fashion space opera, and that's what this is. There are robotic aliens bent on destroying life, a reasonably likable space pilot, and (other than FTL and a few other things you almost always have to suspend disbelief for in stories of this kind) the science isn't bad. The editing, however, is. The errors aren't simple typos. There were at least three cases of misused words (To paraphrase a line from one of my favorite movies - You keep using that word, but I don't think it means what you think it means). There were also bits of text that appeared to be out of place, almost as if the manuscript had been cut into puzzle pieces and reassembled with some crammed into the wrong spots. Despite such things, the story isn't bad for what it is. This isn't great science fiction. There are no deep thoughts or great insights, but as an action adventure with spaceships, it's not bad. ( )

This 2005 novel was the last Berserker book published before the death of the author, Fred Saberhagen.

This novel was quite good. It was mostly a mystery, who or what is the kidnapper, and are the kidnapped still alive? As well as the suspense of preparations for an independent assault on the suspect Berserker base.

The title Berserker isn't met until the last fifth of the book and is quite interesting, though not fully explained because of the main character's preoccupation with finding his family.

The only other Berserker book I've read is "Berserkers: The Beginning" which I also enjoyed. ( )

This is a 'new' Berserker novel, published in 2005. Unfortunately, I found it very difficult to get through. By now, the technology level of the Berserker novels is very dated, the writing style is old-fashioned, and the book was too simplistic. I usually enjoy Saberhagen's works and the Berserker novels too, but this one I did not really enjoy at all. ( )

Another great Berserker book by Saberhagen. This one starred Harry Silver, a veteran of the Berserker universe. His family is kidnapped by an aberrant berserker which is being sought out by other berserkers to be destroyed. Well, that’s what it seems like, anyway. Turns out his enemies were human, but the reason they’re Harry’s enemies is never fully explained. Disappointing, but overall it was a good story.
