I read the original TELL-TALE HEART then this adapted version. I struggle with the old fashioned speech so reading this adapted version helped me understand the old speech better. FYI The dismemberment was removed, as it should be since it's adapted for young readers.

I think this collection is great to give students examples of Poe's different writing styles. I had never read The Golden Bug so it also allowed me to learn something new as well. (

Four of Edgar Allen Poe’s most enthralling mysteries are rewritten for struggling students in high school. The four tales told in this book are: “The Tell-Tale Heart”, a gripping story of a man who drives himself insane, “The Fall of the House of Usher”, another story of terror and death, “The Cask of Amontillado”, an unforgiving story of revenge and finally, “The Gold Bug”, a story of an exciting hunt to find Captain Kidd’s buried treasure. The Majorie Katz, decisively adapts these terrific tales to meet the needs of any student in high school and I recommend them for a ninth grade English class. In fact, “The Cask of Amontillado” is one of the core stories in our school but appears only in its original form. I am delighted to see this and his other stories in a format adaptable for lower level readers.
