It's amazing to me that Claudette Colvin was virtually unknown before this book. And what a great thing that the book's turned out to be quite the award magnet. Maybe next year Outkast will write a jam about her. ( ) The story of Claudette Colvin, a teenager who refused to give up her seat to a white woman on a Birmingham bus almost a year before Rosa Parks made headlines for the same thing, is especially poignant in our troubled times. The descriptions of what black people had to deal with on the bus system in Birmingham, as well as what people (even the police) did to boycotters and those who supported them and testified in court about the boycotts is horrifying. The narrator of this book was very good, and did a great job of differentiating Claudette's voice from the others quoted in the book and the narrative of the book. The civil rights movement was harsh around the world, but shows mostly in the history of segregation in Montgomery Alabama. Although, Rosa Parks is noted for refusing to give up her seat to a white person in history, others had performed this action before her. This story is about one such girl, Claudette Colvin twice refused to give up her seat on the bus and both times she was punished by the white folks and shunned by her own folks. This book is great for history, containing several little comments regarding the laws at the time including how they were made, who created them and how they were inforced. This book will also assist any teacher with explaining the civil rights movement and the unsung heros who paved the way for change.
Today, thanks to Hoose, a new generation of girls – and boys – can add Claudette Colvin to their list of heroines. Pertenece a las series editorialesPremiosListas de sobresalientes
Based on extensive interviews with Claudette Colvin and many others, Phillip Hoose presents the first in-depth account of an important yet largely unknown civil rights figure, skillfully weaving her dramatic story into the fabric of the historic Montgomery bus boycott and court case that would change the course of American history.
