themulhern: Both are lectures about Churchill. The order I listened was Fears -> Ramsden, and I think that's a good order, because Ramsden's has a bit more texture to it. Both are basically biographies, although I think Ramsden's takes more account of Churchill's literary works.… (más)

I liked this well enough (hence the three stars), but I felt it was (a) very brief, and (b) presented from single, narrow viewpoint (which the lecturer, J. Fears, quite clearly declares he is doing.)

To be fair, I just finished (a month or two ago) The Bully Pulpit and I think I was looking for something as ranging and in depth (both!) as that. This lecture series does not set off to do any such thing. Dr. Fears sets out to discuss how Churchill supported and advanced liberty; in this, he is quite successful. But this is a slice of the man, a slice of his effects even, and not really 'Churchill.' ( )

Brief and un-critical discussion of Churchill. The reason Churchill is villified so in the present is that he did as much as three normal over-achievers.

I've never read any biography of Churchill before, and the only good movie about him I"ve watched is "Young Winston". Being so significant, he has shown up in other books I've read, but it's nice to get the framework of his life at last.

Definitely worth the trouble. ( )

I was fortunate enough to be a student of Dr. Fears. If I close my eyes, I could go back to Dale Hall at the University of Oklahoma twenty years ago. I loved his classes, and they went by much to quickly. I was overjoyed when I saw how many lectures he has on Audible's "The Great Courses" catalog. My favorite periods of time to study did not include WWII. Churchill is not someone that I have had much desire to study. If this course had been given by anyone other than Dr. Fears, I would have skipped it. I'm so glad that I didn't. The past 6 hours have been entertaining and informative. It was like being in his class again. I definitely have a new found respect, and interest in Churchill. I can't recommend this course enough. It is most definitely worth the cost of an Audible credit. ( )
