The 8th April 1996 was a bad day for Karen Sharpe, the eighth anniversary of something so deeply buried she had hoped to forget it ever happened. But each year it was there again, pushing to get out. And each year she tried to cope in whatever way she could. Most years she turned to booze. But this year that wasn't going to work. Sometime after midnight Phil Leech, her DS and partner on Operation Anvil, is executed in a military style killing, whilst Fiona Mitchell, his pretty 21 year old informant, ends up face up on a South Pennine moor with bullets through her face and chest. Karen had been due to meet both when drink and memories intervened, preventing her from getting there. The police operation to find Leech's killer - Phoenix - is one of the largest in the history of West Yorkshire. Detective Chief Superintendent John Munro is the Senior Investigating Officer. He thinks two middle tier drug dealers - Coates and Varley - are the most likely suspects. Fiona Mitchell was Coates' girlfriend and both men were the targets on Anvil. There is even a rumour of a deeper relationship between Leech and Mitchell. But Karen isn't sure. Odd details keep pulling her back, forcing her to loo… (más)

This is an ok book
Set in the English countryside Main character is DC Karen Sharpe who investigates the murder of her colleague and his informant.
She does things her way but gets results, the outcome is closer to home than she realises though. ( )

When her boss and a female informant are found dead on the moors in the Pennines, Detective Constable Karen Sharpe realises she should be dead too. But for an anniversary she was observing at home alone, she should have been with them. The deaths have all the hallmarks of a drugs killing but Karen is pretty sure that there is more to it than that. What were they doing out on the moors? Last time she had seen them they were drinking in a hotel. Detective Chief Superintendent Munro realises he needs Karen on his investigation team despite her close connections to the case. But he doesn't know what to make of her and she is difficult to control, not a team member at all. And in her past Karen has a dark secret, something that surfaces annually, for Karen Sharpe is not who she seems. Half way through this story, just when you think all the riddles have been solved, you realise that you are only half way there. Murder investigation becomes strong, rapidly moving thriller. What Karen Sharpe did eight years before comes as a series of staggering surprises. Strongly read by Maggie Mash. ( )

Interesting first novel from John Connor, a senior criminal lawyer with the Crown Prosecution Service in the UK. You can tell he's familiar with police procedure from the way he writes about it, though occasionally he slips into legal speak.

Karen Sharpe is a Detective Constable with a past, she's been undercover a lot and now her partner and a source are found dead. She was blind drunk that night and doesn't remember part of that day. There are suspicions on many people's part about her involvement in the case.

Interesting but I found that parts didn't really flow, it's as if he had some good ideas but failed to link them very well. Not a bad read though just mostly first book stuff. ( )

A reasonable first novel from an English senior criminal lawyer, set in a remote part of the Pennines. A detective and an informer are shot dead. DC Karen Sharpe should have been there - but was passed out drunk. Everyone thinks it is a drug deal gone wrong. She sets out to find the real reason for the murders - which turns out to be related to a deep secret in her past. ( )
