A historical romance of West Texas from the New York Timesâ??bestselling author.

Amelia Howard cherishes her desert country. The dazzling colors, white heat, and rough sensuality of west Texas stir her very soul. But there's a serpent in her paradise: King Culhane. A towering sunburned cowboy with silver eyes that miss nothing, he's a man she's come to despiseâ??no matter how much she had worshiped him when she was younger.

As her father pushes her to secure a marriage proposal from King's mild-mannered brother in order to marry into the Culhane dynasty, Amelia assumes the mask of a demure young lady, always correct and obedient. It's a posture that King holds in contempt. Yet when she reveals the true force of her feelings, she unleashes a smoldering passion that cannot be denied. And everythingâ??propriety, filial duty, even loveâ??will be scorched in the wake of such all-consuming

The love interest in this was such a jerk to the heroine even causing her to be hurt by his actions becauseheroines father has gone mad and is percieved to be sane and amicable to the rest of the world but can change his mood in a moment to become a raving lunatic who hurts his daughter. Hero seduced heroine and because of his HUUUUGE issues thinks it was all the heroines fault and tattles on her "immoral behavior" to the father causing him to beat her sensless. Nice job breaking it hero

I dont have trouble with tortured heroes or angsty plotlines but this one was just awful. If the hero had at least groveled correctly... ( )

While I do love Diana Palmer novels, this particular leading male had me wanting to strangle him. His arrogance goes far beyond the typical arrogant romance hero. His meddling into his brother's business not only made him look bad, it had disastrous results. Going to her father was the act of a spoiled 'bitch' of a man. Sorry for the spoilers, but the guilt he felt wasnt nearly enough. She should have dragged it out and really made him feel bad. It would have served him right if his brother married her, and he woud have lost her. But as usual, love prevails. I'm glad Amelia got what she wanted, but i would have been happier if King suffered some more.
