With over five million copies of her novels in print, New York Times bestselling author Virginia Henley has enchanted readers worldwide. Now she sweeps us back to an intensely romantic, tumultuous time in Scottish history. . . .When Lynx de Warenne, Edward Plantagenet's most prized warrior, invaded Dumfries castle, he took possession of Jane Leslie's home--and soon wanted something more from the headstrong lass. Desperate for an heir, he proposed a handfasting- a Scottish custom whereby a man can lawfully take a woman into his bed, then, after a year and a day, the couple can either wed or part. Any child of that union is deemed legitimate. Jane had no choice but to surrender to the invader's knowing touch. . . .Fearless on the battlefield, Lynx was afraid to love. But Jane slowly stole into his heart. And as the fires of war raged around them, amid treacherous foes and brilliant intrigues, who would have thought that two such unlikely partners would fall in love--or that their breathless passion for each other would outlast . . .Virginia Henley is the author of fourteen romantic novels, including the New York Times bestsellers Seduced and Desired. Her work has been translated into ten languages. A recipient of the Romantic Times Lifetime Achievement Award, she lives in St. Petersburg, Florida, and Ontario, Canada.… (más)

This was a great historical romance. I loved the main and secondary characters, and hated the villain, the mistress and rge catty sisters. I am looking forward to the next book in the series starting the fabulous Jory. It was such a bittersweet ending for her in this book. ( )

Loved this story of Virginia's. Loved all the tales of the scottish families and lands and more often than not brutal and harsh life. a true love story. ( )

I'm not sure if this was historical fiction trying to be romance or romance trying to be historical fiction. Either way, it fails miserably for me. It's too long. It's crammed with a lot of history (history in a period that I know nothing about & can't judge the quality of the info dumps). Henley again starts her book with what feels like a high school freshman joke. This is it for me. I'm not reading Henley again. No matter how good the blurb makes the book sound. ( )

Set in the wilds of Scotland during a period of historic turmoil, Virginia Henley's novel follows the path to happiness through the traditional 1 year, 1 day long period of a Scottish handfasting. While the primary focus of the novel is the love story between Jane Leslie, the daughter of a Scottish steward, and Lynx de Warenne, a powerful, titled English lord who has been brought to Scotland by the activities of his Plantagenet king - and those of his good friend Robert the Bruce. While Jane and Lynx battle with their feelings for one another, Lynx is also forced to choose between king and country and loyalty to his friend.

For a historical romance, I found this particular book to be very engaging, though some of the dialogue and character development is somewhat stilted. It's still a perennial favorite, and the more recent sequels following the lives of other characters first introduced in this book have been just as much fun. All in all, A Year and a Day is a wonderful example of historical romance and a great kick-off to a small sub-series within Henley's world of books, helping to bring meaning and clarity to the events surrounding the Bruce's ascension to the Scottish throne for modern reading audiences.
