A short, fun read in the vein of Sarah Dessen's romance novels. The premise was interesting and original and the characters were easy to get attached to.

Hannah carries a legacy she really wishes she didn't; her father is a Playboy-esque star with a castle full of young women, and her mother is one of his ex-girls, a model who's done some sordid advertisements. Hannah has had to fly under the radar just to avoid the whispers and stares of people all around her.

Hannah's story is basically a simple one; how to maybe reconnect with her father, understand her mother, and deal with her two male coworkers, Josh and Finn, at the fast food restaraunt she takes orders at. Josh is the perfect guy, sensitive and gorgeous, while Finn talks nonstop and drives Hannah crazy with his irrepressible behavior.

Hannah manages to navigate all these obstacles and more in a fairly short time, but it's done very well. The narrative voice is again a little reminscent of Dessen, fun, sarcastic, doubtful, and real. The dialogue is especially fun; the scenes at Hannah's work are probably the best. I loved her changing feelings, and I loved Finn and his goofiness.

Just a feel-good romance with comedy and some serious stuff thrown in, with enough creativity to make it feel fresh and great. ( )

"Pretty much the title says it all .. kinda ... "Something, Maybe" by Elizabeth Scott, is a really good book! I finished it yesterday. And give it 4.5 out of 5 stars!! It is a highly predictable book ... and yet ..."

She's Got Books on Her Mind

Hannah has the bad luck of having a Hugh Hefner type of dad who's never around and who she hasn't talked to for years. Her mother lives in the past walking around in lingerie talking to her fans over the internet. Meanwhile Hannah is trying to get her crush to notice her while simultaneously trying to figure out her sudden feelings for another boy. Hannah is always living in the shadows of her life. She doesn't really have any ambition that I can place. She's just there. She's working with customer's over the phone which I'm sure can be really annoying. Having to work at any capacity for a fast food place can't be fun. Luckily she has two guys to entertain her. Josh, her crush, starts giving her some attention. Getting her some gifts. He looks down on some things that Finn and her do but Hannah is oblivious to his flaws and the obvious attraction she has to Finn. Finn's a bit goofy but he's a sweetheart. It's like he knows sometimes what she needs without her having to say anything. I loved the connection they had. Finn alone was such a great guy who's real and really cares about Hannah. This is another one of those cases where the main character can't see what's right in front of her. When will these girls learn?

So eventually she gets called in by her father. She needs to make the decision whether she wants to go and see him once again. He's not much of a father but he is the father she's stuck with. Maybe he could change. I found it kind of funny the comparison between him and Hugh Hefner. He even had scrapbooks. There was points where I felt sorry for him and others where I sided with Hannah. I originally read this book because the cover was so like How Not to be Popular and I wanted to compare it. I now realize that wouldn't be fair because they are both so different. Something, Maybe has it's own good qualities. I liked it but not nearly as much as I would have hoped. The redeeming quality was what happened with Hannah in the end, love wise and family wise. It was overall a nice story. ( )

Teen reviewer: This is one of the better books I have read recently. Scott crafts a story with a little something for everyone. Teens, especially those struggling with some of the hardships of high school, will definitely relate to Hannah's life. I really appreciate it when authors write book about real issues that kids face.

Pros: Teens looking for humor and an honest friendship, will find them in Teagan, Finn, and Hannah.

There's more to our review - like why we cheer for Hannah, but her parents? Not so much.. Visit The Reading Tub®. While you’re there, add a link to your review of the book.

The Good: It's a fast, easy read. The writing flows well. And at least Finn was a good character.

The Bad: Hannah's dad is obviously supposed to be a caricature of Hugh Hefner. And older, rich man, check. Owns a sexy magazine, check. Dates barely legal girls, more than one at a time, who live in his mansion and have sexy pool time, check. Reality show, check. A change of the name, and a character is "created." Hannah's mom is exactly what one thinks of when you think of Hefner's exes, that have grown to old for him. Struggling, entertaining dudes via webcam, riding the tiny bit of fame she got from some awful TV show that starred her chest in it's younger years. It all screams "ripped from the headlines." Nothing original here at all. Hannah isn't one you'd root for anyway. She's got no confidence, purposely wears clothing that makes her invisible, and yet lusts after a boy based on his looks (while claiming it's for his mind, not that she really knows him or anything). And she thinks that she's going to become a nymphomaniac due to her father's genes, so yeah. ( )

Thanks to Jennifer Klonsky and everyone at Simon Pulse for all they do, and to Robin Rue for her support and kindness.
Thanks also to the usual suspects for reading drafts and providing encouragement, especially Clara Jaeckel and Donna Randa-Gomez.
This book never would have happened without Jessica Brearton--Jess, you wanted to read this story when all I had was a title and about two sentences, and thank you so much for encouraging me and reading it when you barely even had time to sleep! I owe you--well, I owe you a million for this one. And everything else.
