In this story 16-year old Tricia Evanston is riding as a jockey at the Portland Meadows racetrack in Oregon. Her dad, Hal, had been training horses but now has lung cancer and the family is trying to get him to eat as much as possible. He's mentioned in the prayers for healing at church, which embarrasses Tricia. Her mom, Marge, doesn't want Tricia racing because she might get hurt. Her brother, David, echos their mom's concerns. The horse's name is Spitfire, Tricia's the only one he'll allow to ride him. Miss Tee is a young 3 month old horse that belongs to Tricia because she was born on Tricia's birthday & was a gift from her father. They're getting ready to go to the Kentucky Dirby with Spitfire.
