The book is a very readable account of Marshall's storied career in the army and after he left the army to serve as Secretary of State. If there is a criticism to the book it is that the subject sometimes comes across as Olympian. Marshall is described as too selfless to take the glory of leading the D-Day invasion himself, such a professional as to be universally respected by Congress, and so on. The book makes you long for a new national hero, utterly committed to the betterment of his country and willing to avoid any hint of personal aggrandizement so as to better serve his country.
