Kadir Nelson did the beautiful illustrations. A children's picture book that tackles a difficult and complicated topic. This book will elicit questions from students and get them thinking

A poem by a famous poet, followed by a page-long biography. Short, but not simple.

A book of poems by a single author representing the life and difficulties of Coretta Scott, who was raised during the civil rights movement. This book is a short poetic biography of the late Coretta Scott, Martin (Michael) Luther King Jr’s wife. It explains why she felt the way she did growing up, the hardships that her and her siblings endured and why her and Martin Luther King were so well fitted for each other. This book is very good for history, celebrating Black History month, English for writing, especially working with poems. I always have admired the women behind the famous men of our country. Coretta Scott does not disappoint. I enjoyed this book and believe it would be helpful in teaching students about a trying time in human history. ( )

Coretta Scott's story speaks about her life in an interesting way. Her story is written in beautiful poetry, explaining her fight for civil rights. Coretta and her siblings walked five miles to the nearest colored school in the darkness. In her soul, Coretta believes the good Lord intended freedom for the African Americans. Through a nonviolent protest, she worked with Martin Luther King Jr. because Coretta King had a vision of change for African Americans. Nothing didn't stop Coretta from fighting for equality. She wanted peace for African Americans. She sang this verse from a song during the movement. "Ain't let nobody turn me around, turn me around." Ain't gonna let nobody turn me around, gonna keep on a-walkin' keep on a-talkin' walkin' up to freedom land." Singin' always singin'. This song is an old spiritual, used in the civil rights movement. This song represents what African Americans been through which was torture, grief, and hate. This poem explains so much meaning in her life. I enjoyed it because reading about what a true leader trying to do for Americans is a blessing. This poem is very inspiring to young children, teenagers, and adults. Reading this poem can teach you a lesson, once you visualize the words and illustrations. It took so much courage for what Coretta did. ( )

The illustrations in this book were very realistic. It gave life and put into prospective the problems that African Americans, even as children had to go through. The one page of the dust hitting Coretta and her siblings as a result of being left behind on the bus due to the color of their skin was disheartening and saddening. The use of bright colors and bold facial expressions showed how powerful and impactful this scene was. I loved how the book ended with a popular song lyric letting the reader linger on to the hope that was instilled in the people during this time period. This book was a quick glimpse into Correta's life and how she overcame the struggles of having to fight for freedom. ( )
