Cain's House of Mystery seems to have grown itself a sense of self and abandoned him for a new master, an architet named Fig, who has no interest in being stuck at the House at the edge of the Dreaming. It's pretty clear that she has some dominion over the house (or at least it seems to have a special connection with her), but I'm not sure why just yet. Finding out the answer looks to be an adventure though! A bit convoluted at times, but it was an overall entertaining read. This is a collection of short stories framed by the main story of the inhabitants of the House of Mystery. The protagonists from different eras are caught in the house unwillingly, and the most recent arrival is trying to escape. The stories are drawn by different artists, and this is a detail I personally like due to the variety in styles. The stories vary in quality; I thought the one about the flies was the weakest, and I liked the one about the princess and her familiar. Stories are used as currency in the house's bar; you settle your bar tab by telling stories. Not a new concept, the telling of stories in a bar that is, but it works. I will probably look for other volumes in the series. More of a 3.5 stars. So far so good. It was nice to see a bit of Cain and Abel and know what I was heading into, but what really kept me reading was the frame, if not the internal stories as much. I think I prefer all the "simple" stories that have a lot more interesting things going on in the frames best. Very tongue-in-cheek. So far, it isn't brilliant or anything, but I will stay the course to see where it eventually leads. I can't dislike a story about stories, after all, I am a big fan of the style, be it [b:The Arabian Nights|93101|The Arabian Nights|Anonymous|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1388212809s/93101.jpg|859375] or Sandman. I hope there's more arc and less episodic things going on, though.
Writer Matthew Sturges creates intriguing situations, to-the-point dialogue that’s a pleasure to read, and a fascinating cast with a minimum of text, making an issue feel more dense than many others of the same length. Listas de sobresalientes

But, I liked the rest of the stories and the main plot line a lot, so I'll check out the next one. ( )
